Cosmo’s Corner: Celebrating Dia De Los Muertos

Miau y hola, mis amigos! Soy Cosmo, el Gato de la Biblioteca! My longtime readers won’t be surprised to hear me speaking un poco de español. I’m familiar with several human languages and am an avid travel reader, a true kittizen of the world. Some say I put the Cosmo in “cosmopolitan.”. I love multicultural experiences, so I’m particularly excited to tell you about our upcoming Spanish/English bilingual storytime at Grand County Public Library!

Join us on Friday, October 20 at 10:30 a.m. as the library, in partnership with the Moab Valley Multicultural Center (MVMC), presents a bilingual storytime about the Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos). As part of the storytime, we’ll read stories in English and Spanish about this special holiday. The MVMC has even written a story in English and Spanish about the Day of the Dead and will be sharing it at our storytime!

Day of the Dead is observed in Mexico and across Latin America, as well as many places in the U.S. It’s a time to remember and joyfully celebrate those who have passed. The Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1-2, and though it occurs around the same time as Halloween, a discerning and sophisticated cat such as myself would never confuse the two. They are very different holidays.

Later in the month, you can find the library’s book bike at the MVMC’s 13th annual Day of the Dead Celebration. The celebration will be at 156 N. 100 W. on Sunday, October 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. There will be a kids’ tent, a live mariachi band, and delicious traditional Latin food for sale, and admission is free. And of course, our fabulous bicicleta para libros, featuring libros gratis (free books) for all ages! I hope that you can join us for both of these events! Hasta luego, amigos!
