Obituary: Mary LaVon (Stocks) Johnson

September 9, 1942 – July 18, 2023

Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, Mary LaVon (Stocks) Johnson, passed away on July 18, 2023, surrounded by family. Mary found her way back to her Heavenly Home and the Love of her Life, Larry, whom she missed dearly.

Mary was born on September 9, 1942, to Leland Lyle Stocks and Martha Elizabeth Johnson in Long Beach, California. Mary moved with her family to Kenilworth, Utah, as a toddler and then to Moab as a young child.

Mary met and married the love of her life, Larry Stephen Johnson, in Moab on June 29, 1963. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Jordan River Temple on May 20, 1989. Together, they had three children: Stephen (Tanis) Johnson of Stansbury Park, Utah; Danny (Ronda) Johnson of Price, Utah; and Cindy (Tyde) Stanton of Moab.

Mary was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served faithfully in many callings throughout her life. She worked at First Security Bank and then moved over to Utah Power and Light helping customers for many years.

Mary loved helping and being there for her family and friends. She was always making rolls, bread, and her special cookies for many occasions. And we can’t forget her frybread! She made quilts for many of her nieces, nephews and others. She loved going out in the hills with family and friends. She and Larry enjoyed camping, fishing, family gatherings, traveling, camp hosting and just driving around. She was always available to comfort and care for anyone. She was a refuge for many with their troubles and was a wonderful example of love and family. She always wanted her grandkids around and gave them much love. She was a dearly loved grandma and aunt to all. She had a great sense of humor and was always ready for a laugh and a good joke.

Mary is survived by her children, seven grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, of 59 years, her parents, her sister Bethale (Jack) Lawley, her sister-in-law, Liz Stocks, her brothers, Bud Stocks and Lyle (Jan) Stocks and many other loved ones.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 29, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel on 400 North, with a viewing one hour prior. A live streaming will be on the Spanish Valley Mortuary Facebook page. Burial will follow at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
