Obituary: Allen John Knapp, August 7, 1939 — August 10, 2019

Allen John Knapp, 80, passed away on August 10, 2019 at Huntsman Cancer Center in Salt Lake City.

Al was the beloved father of Norman Andrew Knapp of Moab, UT; beloved brother of Barbara Morgan of Osseo, MI and Mark Knapp of Warren, MI; and beloved grandfather to 5 granddaughters, Heather, Amanda, Samantha, Bobbi and Lexi. He is loved and missed by a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Al was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Rose; his sister, Katherine; and his brothers, Robert and Andrew.

Al was born August 7, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1957. Al honorably served his country in the Navy from 1957 to 1963.

Al held various vocations as an entrepreneur, but always came back to his first love: teaching. Al held various instructional and administrative positions in Michigan education from 1965 to 1981.

He worked in the Wyoming Uinta County District #4, first as an elementary principal, then as business manager. He served as superintendent from 1981 until his retirement in 1996. Post-retirement, Al created and ran the Raven’s Nest bar in Mountain View, Wyoming.

Al served as his mother’s primary caretaker for several years until her passing in 2007.

From 2007 until his death, Al lived in Moab near his son, Norman. He spent his retirement years there, spending a few summer months back in Michigan and occasionally wintering in Nevada. He loved TV westerns, arguing politics and pampering his precious dachshund, Penny Lou.

Al touched the lives of so many people for the better – family, friends and strangers. He will be missed by all who knew him.

At Al’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
