Minnesota man dies in rappelling accident at Moonflower Canyon

A Minnesota man’s body was recovered on Tuesday, June 5, at Moonflower Canyon by the Grand County EMS and the Utah Department of Public Safety.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office reports 33-year-old Scott Henning had hiked with a friend to the area above Moonflower Canyon on June 4, and was rappelling down the cliff in to the canyon when he encountered a problem with the rope and fell approximately 60 feet.

The rappelling accident was called into the sheriff’s office at 6:27 p.m. on June 4, reports said, and Grand County Search and Rescue and Grand County EMS responded to the area. The terrain made access difficult, and Classic Lifeguard assisted in flying Grand County EMS to the victim’s location. Because of safety reasons, the decedent was recovered with the assistance of the Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter the following day, reports said, and transported to the medical examiner’s office in Taylorsville.
