Students need help to build catapult

DEAR EDITOR,

I am a science teacher at Grand County High School. My physics class would like to build a catapult to enter the Youth Garden’s Pumpkin Chuckin’ Festival on Oct. 25.

The chance to put physics concepts in action in such a BIG way is a real treat for our young people, and they are enthusiastic about the opportunity to compete against the other teams, including San Juan High School. However, I have no budget to work with for materials.

By the time we got the information and decided as a class to take on the project, the deadline for a WabiSabi grant had passed, and other funding avenues, such as school/ community council, won’t provide funds in time. So – I’m asking for your help in the form of either cash or supplies. We need: lumber (4 x 4s or 2 x 4s), bolts and nuts, wood screws, paint, bungee cords and pumpkins (8-10 pounds).

Please either e-mail me (walker-irvinm@grandschools.org) or call the school at 259-8933 and leave me a message if you can help. Thank you all for your kind consideration and support!
