In memory of Claudia Bissitt

October 24, 1953 — March 20, 2024

Claudia Bissitt—devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend—passed away early Wednesday morning, March 20, 2024, at St. Mary’s Hospital with her daughters by her side after fighting a long battle with health problems.

Claudia was born and raised in Moab where she spent most of her life and became known to everyone she came into contact with. She was best known in the community for her witty personality and tough exterior. She leaves behind a legacy of a person who is strong, determined and who can tolerate difficulty or suffering. She was truly amazing.

Claudia spent many years in the field of customer service with her most memorable jobs being at Canyonlands Café, the Outlaw Saloon, the old bowling alley, and the restaurant in Crescent Junction back in their glory days. For those that are from Moab: you know. She loved these people, places, and times and the memories will live on forever in our hearts.

Claudia met the love of her life, Kenneth Bissitt, in 1987 and they married shortly after. Together they enjoyed fishing, bowling and living life to its fullest until his untimely death in 1993. Claudia never remarried.

Claudia was a spitfire who enjoyed the simple things in life: spending time with family, playing cards, putting together a good puzzle, a quick trip to Towaoc, playing bingo, and any kind of craft project that she could think of. Claudia was also known for her sense of humor. Each week, she would look in the paper and, when asked what she was reading, she would very jokingly say that she was looking in the obituaries to see if she was in this week’s paper. Well, Mom: you made it!

Claudia is survived by her children, Lanette Denton (Erik), Laresha Lake (David), Lizabeth Denton; her grandchildren, Skylar Bissitt, Donavin Denton, Destiny Bissitt, Anthony Denton, Matthew Lake, Justeen Denton, Bryce Denton, Katelyn Murphy, Taylor Denton, Hailey Wilson, Jordan Bell, Kayden Hill, and Taydum Hill; her great-grandchildren, Araya Denton, Colt Cockroft, Landon Denton, Aurora Denton, and Ridger Wilson;  her sisters, Jeannie Luddington (Mark) of Craig, Colorado; Laura Claeys (Mark) of Salt Lake City; and sister-in-law, Linda Shupe of Spokane, Washington.

Claudia was preceded in death by her parents, Ivan Wilson Shupe of Nucla, Colorado, and Colleen LaRae Irish of Moab; her husband, Kenneth Bissitt; her son, Dustin Bissitt (Heidi); and her brothers, Gary, Lynn, and Wayne Shupe.

The Denton family would like to thank the Moab Regional Hospital medical team, Moab Valley Fire Department, first responders and St. Mary’s Hospital for all of the years that you helped take care of our mom. Thanks for the peace of mind knowing that she was always in good hands.

At Claudia’s request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at Spanish Valley Mortuary (386 N. 100 West) with a potluck following at Old City Park at 3:30 pm.You may send condolences to the family at www.SpanishValleyMortuary.com.
