Cosmo’s Corner: Stories for budding musicians

Meow-meow and hello, everyone.  It’s your friend Cosmo the Library Cat, here to invite you to our latest musical story hour on Saturday, April 13 at 10:30 a.m. at the Moab Library.

As previously mentioned, I have always been a great music lover. I was encouraged to yowl freely and pursue experimental music forms when I was just a tiny kitten. I would never call myself a prodigy, yet the comparisons to W.A. Mozart and Yo-Yo Ma have followed me since I composed my first ensemble piece in kittenhood, Sonatina for Three Feline Voices and Trash Can Lid in D Minor.

Babies and toddlers also love music, but most of them cannot play a musical instrument or carry a tune very well. But don’t despair. Even very young children can learn music skills. Though they may not go on to pursue careers in avant-garde composition, music skills and appreciation can improve kids’ early literacy, social, and motor skill development, not to mention providing a source of delight and joy for their entire lives!

During our musical story hour, led by Kate Clark and Nicole Cornelius, the youngsters will learn about the fundamentals of music while enjoying stories, games, songs, and crafts. The April story hour participants can also take home their own music scarf!  Those colorful scarves are a lot of fun to wave around while singing or dancing. Helpful tip: I’ve found that it’s important to keep your claws retracted when you use them.

Musical Story Hour is free and is suitable for children from newborns on up and is a partnership between Grand County Public Library and the Moab Music Festival, with additional support from the Moab Synergy Company.  Any child can join at any point in the series. Each story hour is different, but they are all focused on teaching music basics to children. April’s musical story hour is the final one this spring.  Our next one will be in September, when we’ll return for another 3-part series.

Meow for now, my friends!
