Springtime for Cosmo: Word from the Library Cat

Greetings and meow everyone. It’s Cosmo the Library Cat. Spring is here and it’s making me feel energized and excited, almost kittenish!  I’ve cut back my sleep time to a mere 15 hours a day and I am spending more time outdoors climbing trees and rolling around in the dirt. These are classic springtime activities that I highly recommend. Fun and wholesome!

It’s not just me–authors and illustrators are inspired by spring too. Grand County Public Library has several picture books that capture the excitement of spring.

First on my list is “Fletcher and the Springtime Blossoms.”  This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a very silly fox who sees fruit blossom petals falling in an orchard and concludes that they are snowflakes! I don’t want to give too much away, but after Fletcher spreads the news that winter is back, his mistake is discovered and everyone is very relieved. Moral of the story: if it doesn’t feel cold and wet, it probably isn’t snow. My librarian friends adore this book; who doesn’t love a cautionary tale about trusting dogs and their relatives?

I also really enjoy “When Spring Comes,” which illustrates some of the lovely changes that we see when winter turns to spring. This charming book also features several cats, a testament to the wisdom of the author.

Any gardeners out there will relate to “And Then It’s Spring.” In this picture book, a child plants seeds while the ground is still cold and bare.  Then after a long, anxious wait the seeds finally start sprouting and everything around begins turning green. If you’re into gardening, I would be happy to help you dig some holes for your seeds and help pat down the dirt around them. However, I just might dig them up again. Don’t question my methods; I’m a cat (read: visionary).

I’m also happy to report that, thanks to our excellent gardening crew, the plants around the library are looking wonderful. The trees, shrubs and flowers are beginning to bud, and there are already a few patches of delicious green grass. Stop by the library and you can see it for yourself. Happy spring, my friends!
