Grand County Schools Superintendent to retire

Taryn Kay has led school district since 2020

In a letter addressed to the Grand County School District community issued on January 31, Superintendent Taryn Kay formally announced her retirement, effective July 2024, with “mixed emotions.”

“After a fulfilling and rewarding 34-year career, the past four of which have been spent serving as the Superintendent of GCSD Schools, it is time for me to embark on the next chapter of my life,” Kay said in a released statement.

In July 2020, Kay assumed the role of superintendent after nine years as the principal of Helen M. Knight Elementary School, succeeding outgoing JT Stroder.

During her leadership, the school district saw many changes including the unprecedented disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, Kay witnessed the completion of the Margaret L. Hopkin Middle School which was named after her late spouse, a former GCSD superintendent and beloved local educator who passed away in 2020.

“It has been a privilege to work alongside dedicated educators, staff, and community members who share a common commitment to providing an exceptional education to GCSD students,” Kay said.

Despite bidding adieu, Kay assured the community that the school board has a process in place to select the next superintendent in the coming months.

“I am confident that they will find an excellent candidate who will continue what we’ve begun and take GCSD to new levels of success,” she said.
