SyFy movie series returns to Moab

Get ready for an intergalactic cinematic journey as the 4th Annual Moab SYFY Film Festival makes its grand return this February 2024! The highly anticipated science fiction film festival, a favorite among locals and visitors alike, promises an unforgettable experience featuring iconic extraterrestrial encounters on the big screen.

This year’s lineup includes classic and contemporary gems that delve into alien contacts of the third kind.

The spotlight falls on timeless masterpieces, “It Came from Outer Space” (1953) and “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (1951), alongside the more recent hit “Arrival” (2016).

Each film in this year’s series unfolds a captivating narrative involving direct contact with beings from outer space, raising questions about their mysterious motives. Some aliens are accidental visitors, while others arrive with a mission to assist Earth’s human race. The common thread weaving through these films is the exploration of human reactions to these otherworldly visitors.

On February 2, movie-goers can view 1953’s “It Came From Outer Space.” This film, featuring a gooey otherworldy one-eyed creature, was based on an original story by Ray Bradbury and was the first movie filmed in 3-D to be released from producers Universal-International.

Staying with the theme of alien contact, February 9 will screen “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” This 1951 Cold War allegory has all the classic features of a science fiction film: flying saucers, stern scientists and theremin music in the film score.

Finally, on February 16, the 2024 series will close with 2016’s critically acclaimed film “Arrival,” directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

All screenings will take place at the Moab Arts building (111 E. 100 N., Moab), starting at 7:00 p.m..

The festival, co-sponsored by the City of Moab Arts and Recreation Departments and the Moab Sun News, is a collaborative effort to bring the community together for an entertaining winter evening.

Event founders Nora Shepard and Richard Codd have curated a selection of films that can entertain audiences of all ages.

This cinematic celebration is a testament to Moab’s commitment to providing residents and visitors with engaging and enjoyable events, even on chilly winter nights.

All festival screenings are free to attend, and attendees can look forward to special door prizes to cap off each evening’s festivities.
