Obituary: Cruz Agapito Madrid

August 16, 1935 – September 13, 2023

Cruz Agapito Madrid, 88, passed away on September 13 at his home in La Sal, Utah, with family at his side.

Cruz was born in Abiquiu, New Mexico, on August 16, 1935. He was raised in this small community located in northern New Mexico overlooking the beautiful verdant Chama River Valley. Here he developed his passion and appreciation for the great outdoors.

Soon after, he met the love of his life and his true soul mate: Mary Francis Lovato of Gallina, New Mexico. They married and had seven children: Jeannie Johnston (Richard), Verlene Butts, Donna Boyer, Diane Lovato, deceased, Shirley Veenis (Steve), Rudy Madrid (Carol) and Mitch Madrid (Sandy, deceased). Survivors also include his sister Isabel War (Archie), 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family moved to Moab where he began his career working for many of the top uranium mines. Even though it was a dangerous and hazardous work environment, he persevered and worked in the industry for over 30 years.

Cruz was an avid outdoorsman, loving to hunt, fish, camp and farm. We will truly miss him and his vitality for life.

Funeral Mass will be held Friday, September 29th at the St. Pius X Catholic Church at 10 a.m. A Rosary and viewing services will be held at the St. Pius X Catholic Church on Thursday, September 28 at 7 p.m. Burial will follow the services on Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
