Cosmo’s Corner: Picnic time!

Meow to all my friends, it’s Cosmo the library cat. I’m happy to invite you to an upcoming event at the Grand County Public Library that combines three of my favorite interests: books, food, and the great outdoors for a Picnic Storytime!  As a proud bookworm, gourmand, and outdoor enthusiast I am shocked I didn’t think of this idea myself! But I always give credit where credit is due (I’ve occasionally been described as magnanimous) and this time the credit goes to the children’s librarians.

The Picnic Storytime will be on Saturday, August 26 at 10:30 a.m. We’ll sit outside in the courtyard area under the canopy and enjoy stories, songs, and activities about picnics. Afterwards, everyone can make their own “ants on a log” treat. For those not familiar with this classic snack for humans, it combines celery sticks with a soft filling, such as peanut butter, cheese or hummus, and sprinkles of fruits or nuts.  Cookies and crackers will also be served.

I’m told that this is a typical kind of picnic for humans (and maybe aardvarks) and while I think it sounds pretty fun, nothing tops a kitten picnic. I’m assuming you’ve never been invited to one, so let me tell you about what they entail (get it? “en-tail”?):  romping around, climbing trees, rolling in the dirt, chasing your own tail, and then, when you’ve worked up an appetite, eating lots of grass, and maybe a couple of bugs, on or off the log! Doesn’t that sound great?  No? Well, à chacun son goût. (That means “each to their own taste” in French.)

This storytime is free and geared towards children ages 3 to 10 and their caregivers, but all ages are welcome. Don’t be surprised if some birds and insects join the fun, since they seem to like picnics too. I hope to see you there, my friends!
