Tiny house pulls utility lines down, interrupts internet service on Main Street

A driver hauling an oversized tiny house on a flatbed trailer tore powerlines down near 100 North and Main Street on June 13, causing an internet and electrical outage of about 4 hours and damaging infrastructure estimated at over $20,000.

According to reports from the Moab Police Department, the truck turned east onto 100 North from Main Street, where the peak of the house caught a powerline run between Moonflower Community Cooperative and the Post Office. The truck did not stop at the scene but kept driving until the line snapped and damaged an Emery Telcom line, causing a power and internet outage. “The power pole was extensively damaged and may have to be replaced,” an MPD spokesperson reported, estimating damages to be at least $22,500.

Police pulled the vehicle over on 400 East, where the driver admitted that he was aware that he hit the line. Reports say the man “claimed he knew he was under the required height, so it wasn’t his problem.”

An inspection by a Department of Transportation official verified that the load was two feet higher than allowed and the transportation of the tiny house was not permitted. The truck and trailer were impounded and the driver was cited.
