Cosmo’s Corner: Eclipse science and more!

Hello friends, it’s Cosmo the library cat. If you’re like me, you’ve spent the last few months looking forward to summer, only to be a little bored now that it’s actually here. Luckily, there are two Grand County Public Library events scheduled for next week, sure to bring some excitement to our lives!

First up, on Tuesday, June 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Center Street Ballfield: “All Together with Water.” We’ll have water art, water challenges, and water games. Hopefully, everyone will get a little wet (except for me), so dress accordingly and bring a towel, sun protection, and a water bottle (to keep you hydrated). This event is geared towards children ages 3 to 10 and their caregivers, but all ages are welcome. Unfortunately, my dapper whiskers get depressingly droopy when they get damp, so I am going to observe this event from a safe distance.

Our second event is on Wednesday, June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Moab Library. Astronomer Cris White, Eclipse Coordinator for the Earth to Sky Interagency Partnership, will present a talk called “Scientific Discoveries Made During Eclipses.” This event is for space enthusiasts of all ages. Did you know that the conditions created by eclipses have led to many major scientific breakthroughs, such as the discovery that the Earth is round and proof of Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity? Pretty cool, huh? I’m curious to learn more! In 500 to 600 million years, our moon will have moved too far away from the earth for solar eclipses to occur, so we had better learn all we can about them while we still have the chance, is all I’m saying.
