Multicultural center honored for advocacy, civic engagement and immigration legal services

The Moab Valley Multicultural Center has a lot to celebrate.

The center recently expanded its staff, certified an additional medical language interpreter and received accolades for its impactful work in the Moab community.

Salt Lake City-based nonprofit Holy Cross Ministries awarded the Moab Valley Multicultural Center the “Innovative Agency of the Year” award for its immigration legal services.

Rhiana Medina, executive director at the Moab Valley Multicultural Center (MVMC), attended an awards luncheon in Salt Lake City to receive the award on behalf of the center on May 30.

“I’m honored that the center is being recognized on the Wasatch Front by such distinguished colleagues,” Medina said. “We will continue to work diligently with partner organizations locally and statewide to meet the needs of our community.”

The MVMC was also awarded the UNA Nonprofit Organizational Credential Badge in Advocacy and Civic Engagement with the help of Zaida Agreda, MVMC’s programs coordinator.

This badge recognizes the time commitment, staffing capacity and organizational alignment that the MVMC demonstrates in completing their mission. The MVMC was honored to receive this award, noting that since 2015 UNA has only awarded 114 badges in a state with over 10,000 nonprofits.

MVMC Education Coordinator Quincy Masur underwent a 40 hour training and exam to become MVMC’s newest certified medical interpreter.

MVMC staff continues to provide invaluable language access services throughout Moab and the surrounding area. To this end, MVMC welcomed two new staff members in June: Liz Donkersloot was hired as the housing resource coordinator and Juliana Rey was hired as the new programs assistant.

Rey hails from Colombia and Donkersloot is originally from Michigan. Both bring a wealth of experience working with children, education and nonprofits to the multicultural center, Medina said.
