Softball team steamrolls Richfield, splits with North Sanpete

The Grand County High School (GCHS) softball team wound toward spring break last week, competing at home for the final times this season in a pair of double headers as Easter approaches.

The GCHS Lady Red Devil softball team continued its region ascent, trouncing Richfield in back-to-back games in Moab on Thursday, April 4, then splitting a pair of games versus North Sanpete in GCHS’s final home games of the season on Monday, April 8.

The Lady Red Devils excelled on both the plate and the mound Thursday, allowing the Lady Wildcats just five hits the entire afternoon. Meanwhile, GCHS had four home runs on the day.

In the first game, Paige Shumway complemented a complete game, two-hit performance on the mound with a home run and four runs batted in, while Jaci Shumway also hit a home run. In the night cap, Jaci Shumway, Corteney Noyes and Jessica Jones each took Richfield deep, while Jaci Shumway earned the pitching win, holding Richfield to three hits.

North Sanpete fared better against the Lady Red Devils in the first game of Monday’s double header, hitting three home runs en route to a 7-6 victory. In the losing effort, Paige Shumway and Hannah Owen each hit home runs, Noyes hit both a double and triple, Hannah Tangren hit a triple and Jones had a double.

The second game of the day was another close and moderately scoring affair until the bottom of the fifth inning, in which GCHS scored seven runs to break open what had been an 8-6 game. The Lady Red Devils tacked on a run in the sixth inning to end the game at 16-6 via mercy rule (one team leads by 10 or more runs at the end of the fifth inning or later).

GCHS’s power surge continued with home runs from Jaci Shumway, Jones and Lexi Carroll, as well as doubles from Paige Shumway, Jones, Owen, and Lainey Bohannon.

With their home slate finished, the GCHS Lady Red Devils are a second-place 7-2 in Region 15 play with three games remaining on the schedule. GCHS plays a double header at South Sevier on Friday, April 12, at 2 and 4 p.m., before their regular season finale at San Juan on Tuesday, April 23.
