Bananas for reusable bags

Shoppers in the City of Moab may notice empty bag carousels at stores such as City Market, where Lisa Reimer (left) and her daughter Sierra Reimer, from Littleton, Minnesota, were seen placing their groceries in their own bags on Jan. 8. Beginning on Jan. 1, the city’s ordinance to ban single-use, carry out plastic bags took effect. The ordinance does not apply to thicker and more durable plastic bags that can be reused, or bags that shoppers use to package fruits, vegetables and other bulk items. Businesses that violate the ban could face a fine of up to $250 for the first violation, following a written warning within a one-year time frame. For second and subsequent violations, the maximum allowable fine will double, to $500. [Photo by Murice D. Miller / Moab Sun News]
