Red Devil boys golfers are Region 15 runner-up

The Grand County High School (GCHS) boys golf team tied with Richfield at 330 strokes apiece at the Carbon Country Club on Monday, Sept. 24, at the Region 15 Championship tournament. The championship is awarded on total season strokes, to which the Red Devils trailed the Wildcats, settling for second place for the season.

Individually, junior Jaxen Saunders shot a 77 on Monday, while senior Kane Scherer shot 87, senior Nolan Ramirez shot 88 and junior Luke Williams shot 89.

For the season, Saunders (fifth place cumulative score), and his brother, sophomore Rafe Saunders (tied for tenth), earned Top 12 medals. Scherer and senior Kai Wainer each earned Academic All-Region honors.

The Red Devils return to Meadow Brook in Taylorsville, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1 and 2, where they hope to win a fourth consecutive state championship. The Red Devils placed third in Region 15 play at Meadow Brook on Monday, Sept. 17.

The girls tennis team also competed in its region championship tournament, placing fourth as a team. Grand qualified its competitors in each of the five divisions for the state tournament at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29.

In No. 1 singles, Biw Thanutchaya placed third, while Maara Holyoak placed fourth in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Kiersten Kimmerle placed third, as did Jamie Day and Kyla Jackman in No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, Jenny Kopell and Chloe Talbot placed fourth.

In volleyball, the Lady Red Devils endured a 3-0 shutout at Emery on Tuesday, Sept. 18, losing the games 25-17, 26-24 and 25-19. Corteney Noyes had nine kills for Grand.

The Lady Red Devils rebounded at home versus South Sevier on Thursday, Sept. 20, winning 3-2. Grand won the first game 25-18, before the Lady Rams took the second 26-24 and the third 25-20. GCHS hung tough on its home court, however, winning the fourth game 25-22 to force a decisive fifth game, which Grand won 15-12 to take the match.

The Lady Red Devils are scheduled to play at Monticello on Thursday, Sept. 27, before returning home for matches against Manti on Friday, Sept. 28, and North Sanpete on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Monticello match begins at 5:30 p.m., while the Manti match has the traditional 6:30 p.m. start time. Against North Sanpete, C team will begin play at 11 a.m., with junior varsity and varsity immediately to follow.

On the pitch, the Lady Red Devils soccer team lost in Richfield 3-1 on Tuesday, Sept. 18, then tied Emery 2-2 in Moab on Thursday, Sept. 20. Neelie Relph scored the lone goal against the Lady Wildcats, while Corah Moody scored both of Grand’s goals against the Lady Spartans.

Grand was scheduled to play North Sanpete in Moab on Tuesday, Sept. 25, and is set to play host to Manti on Friday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m.
