Girls tennis team sweeps homecoming versus Millard

The Grand County High School girls tennis team put forth a dominating effort in its final home match of the season, coinciding with homecoming week, only giving away four game points in a 5-0 drubbing of Millard on Thursday, Sept. 13.

Junior Biw Thanutchaya won her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-0; sophomore Maara Holyoak won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles and junior Kiersten Kimmerle won by the same score in No. 3 singles; senior Jamie Day and sophomore Kyla Jackman won 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles; and sophomore Chloe Talbot and freshman Molly Knowles won 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 doubles.

Next up for the Lady Red Devils is the Region 15 Championship tournament in Manti on Friday, Sept. 21.

Meanwhile, the Grand County High School boys golf team is also gearing up for its region tournament, having placed second on Thursday, Sept. 13, at Carbon. North Sanpete placed first with 326 strokes, followed by Grand with 331, Manti with 341, Richfield with 344, Emery with 366 and South Sevier with 367.

Grand was scheduled to meet the other Region 15 teams in Taylorsville on Monday, Sept. 17, ahead of the championship tournament on Monday, Sept. 24, at the Carbon Country Club.

The volleyball team still has a lot of season to go before its region tournament, losing to San Juan in straight sets in Blanding on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The Lady Broncos had their way with Grand 25-13, 25-21, 25-18. In the loss, Jessica Jones had 10 kills and Jaci Shumway had five kills and two service aces.

The Lady Red Devils were scheduled to compete at Emery on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and are next scheduled to play South Sevier in Moab on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

Grand competes in girls soccer at home versus Emery on Thursday, Sept. 20, and versus North Sanpete on Tuesday, Sept. 25. Both matches begin at 4 p.m.
