Federal agency hosts two-day seminar on harassment and bias

The federal agency tasked with enforcing laws against employment discrimination, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), announced that it is hosting a two-day EEOC Las Vegas Technical Assistance Program Seminar (TAPS) for both private and public employer representatives, confirmed to take place on Sept. 11 and 12.

The seminar will take place at the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada.

The EEOC said that in light of the Me Too and Times Up movements, this year’s seminar will include a focus on harassment, updates on EEO law and training on how to conduct effective investigations.

Expert EEOC presenters will include Los Angeles District Director Rosa Viramontes, Regional Attorney Anna Park, and Supervisory Administrative Judge Diane Gross. Officials from the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, Southern Nevada Society for Human Resources Managers, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and others are slated to present.

The seminar is geared toward human resources and union officials, attorneys, mediators and equal employment opportunity (EEO) professionals in the private and federal sectors, along with other interested parties.

The comprehensive training sessions and workshops will provide updates and guidance on how to approach EEO situations the way the EEOC experts do.

“The EEOC is excited to host its training seminar in Las Vegas this year,” said Wendy Martin, local director for the EEOC’s Las Vegas local office. “We are very pleased to offer this one-of-a-kind seminar where the EEOC brings together experts to share their knowledge with the employer community in and around Las Vegas.”

Rosa Viramontes, district director for the EEOC’s Los Angeles District, which includes Southern Nevada in its jurisdiction, added, “We are thrilled to return to Las Vegas to connect with local employer representatives. Our seminar is an opportunity to hear firsthand from EEOC officials who will provide updates and guidance on how to address and prevent discrimination, harassment and retaliation in the workplace.”
