Spelling bee champions

Grand County Middle School eighth-grade English teacher Erik Secrist (kneeling) coached a team of GCMS students who won the Grand County School District Spelling Bee at Helen M. Knight Elementary on Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Rowan Murdock (left), the son of Brian and Alina Murdock, won first place; Diego Winn, the son of Jack Winn and Zaida Agreda, won second place; and Evan Welch, the son of Brody and Elizabeth Wright, won third place.

All three students are eighth-graders at the middle school. They will represent the district at a March 9 regional competition at the Grand County High School auditorium.

The winner of the regional competition will go on to the nationals, accompanied by a chaperone.
