Junior Devils wrestle in Monticello

Seven Moab Junior Devils traveled to Blanding for a junior high wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25.

All brackets were five-man round robins and there were ten teams overall. The Junior Devils came in 8th place as a team with only seven wrestlers.

Dylan Harrison placed first at 70 pounds and Kayden Robertson placed first at 95 pounds. Maison Moyle placed second at 105 pounds. Trea Meyer third at 160 pounds. Dane Glencoe placed fourth at 90 pounds. Joe Sanders placed fifth at 75 pounds and Gregory Stubblefield placed fifth at 125 pounds;

“I’d like to thank Coach Eddie and all the dads that covered for me at this tournament,” said coach Kelly Sheets.

On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24 and 25, four Little Devils and one Junior Devil traveled to Richfield with coach Sheets for the Utah Nationals / Beehive Brawl.

The tournament had close to 1100 participants from ten different states ages pre-Kindergarten to 14 years old.

On Friday night the six-and-under and the eight-and-under groups wrestled.

In the six-and-under division, Austin Peris won one and lose two in the 49-pound bracket. Lane Peterson, won two and lost two in the 55-pound bracket, earning the sixth place medal. Ean Ellis won two and lost one in the 70-pound bracket, earning a third place medal.

On Saturday, Landon Moralez “wrestled his heart out” but went 0-2, said coach Sheets.

Carson Sheets competed in the 12-and-under, 84-pound division, consisting of 31 wrestlers in a 32 man bracket from five different states.

This is Carson Sheet’s fourth year at the Brawl, and it has been a long time goal to bring a medal home from this tournament.

“This was his year,” said coach Sheets.

Carson Sheets won four and lost two on the day earning a fourth place medal.

The Junior Devils traveled to Monticello on Saturday, Jan. 16 to compete in a mini-junior high school tournament. Teams attending were from Monticello, Moab, Blanding, Whitehorse/Monument Valley. No team scores were kept.

Joe Sanders, in his first ever wrestling experience, lost both matches. Caison Ault won one and lost two; Carson Whitney lost both matches; Dylan Harrison won one and lost one match; Tigis Glencoe won one and lost two matches; Carson Sheets won both matches; Dane Glencoe lost both matches; Kayden Robertson won four matches; and Maison Moyle won two and lost one match.

Taison Wilson, also in his first ever wrestling experience, lost both matches. Greg Stubblefield won four matches, and Trea Meyer won two and lost one match.

“For being a first year start up team, our boys did really well and represented their home town well,” said coach Kelly Sheets.

Independent of the team, Carson Sheets traveled to Christy’s Clash in Syracuse, a tournament to raise money for breast cancer research.

Sheets, age 12 in sixth grade, competed in two age divisions: sixth and seventh grade, 79 to 86 pounds and eighth and ninth grade, 86 to 92 pounds.

Carson finished second in both age divisions winning two and losing one match in the sixth and seventh grade division and 3-1 in the eighth and ninth grade division.

The Junior Devils will be hosting a tournament versus a team from Monticello on Wednesday, Jan. 29, immediately after the Grand County High School tournament versus Dove Creek at the Grand County High School.

“Come and support both the Grand County Red Devils and the Moab Junior Devils,” Sheets said.
