A grown up Christmas play

It’s an evening for grown-ups.

Yet, it benefits Grand County schoolchildren.

“Miracle on First North” is an ‘adult’ evening of holiday theater,” said Hailey Henderson.

It is a special collaboration by Emily Niehaus of Community Rebuilds, longtime Moab theater patron and performer Mary McGann, and Henderson, a recent graduate of the theater and performing arts program at Westminster College. Proceeds from the performances will benefit Community Rebuilds and the Grand County Education Foundation.

“Come one, come all,” Niehaus said. “This play is going to be fabulous.”

The evening will feature four selected shorts from Christmas plays written by David Sedaris John Cariani and Jim Lindheim.

The shorts will be taken from Sedaris’ “The Santaland Diaries” and Cariani’s “Welcome to Almost, Maine.” Local playwright Lindhiem has two working titles for his play: “Oh Come All Ye Fretful” or “Deck the Halls with Bouts of Holly.”

“There is some colorful language so parents should exercise caution in bringing young children,” Henderson said.

Niehaus, McGann, and Henderson will trade off directorial duties.

“The cast and crew is an eclectic assemblage of local Moab talent,” Henderson said.

The actors include Logan Hansen, Sommer Stewart, Sarah Sidwell, Pippa Thomas, Shane Bartosh, Brendon Henderson, Chaz Howard and Amos Van Horn. Pianist: Sheila Strahan will play the music on the piano. Eleanor Inskip designed the costumes. Michaeline Pendleton is doing the makeup.

Intermission will feature a half hour holiday party – drinks, snacks, and games available for purchase.

“There will also be a Silent Night Auction for last minute shopping,” said Henderson.

“And you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap!”

Performances will occur for two nights only on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20 and 21 at the Moab Arts and Recreation Center.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, and are available in advance exclusively at Back of Beyond Bookstore.
