Firefighters started a fire Wednesday, Oct. 17 to burn bulrushes and sedges in the Scott L. Matheson Wetlands Preserve. The Nature Conservancy and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, which own the preserve, worked with firefighters from several agencies to manage the 200-acre fire. Jeremy Bailey of The Nature Conservancy said the goal of the fire was to reduce the bulrushes by 65 to 85 percent, preserve the cottonwoods and open the water area for migrating birds.
