Dear Editor,
Kudos to Lurell Stocks Bailey for the excellent letter about the “accidental” – rather, careless and thoughtless slaughter of the big, beautiful, old cottonwood trees at Lion’s Park. What? Your chainsaw just “slips” through three-foot tree trunks? She expressed my feelings exactly. Far too little respect is shown for trees around here. They are not abundant, and big, old trees like those are irreplaceable. Flagrant waste like this does not just happen. Someone is responsible. We now have lost shade, water retention, habitat and beauty. The river ecosystem has been severely altered. Stand up, suck it up, accept responsibility for this “mistake” and do everything possible to make amends to this community. Unfortunately, we will not live long enough to see trees grow to that size.
