The Grand County road department has been taking sand from the popular sand hill across Hwy 191 from Arches National Park. The BLM says the County has been taking extra sand from the site due the snow and ice associated with an unusually cold winter. Some Moab residents expressed disappointment in seeing heavy equipment digging into the hillside. Castle Valley resident Greg Child said “As a dad I see it as one of the most popular places for kids in town, and a roadside ‘destination’ for many visiting families. I would support its preservation rather than its exploitation.” The County’s road supervisor Bill Jackson said this might be the last year the county takes sand from the site.
