In the role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, characters tell stories and go on adventures. Everything in the game is completely based on dice rolling and chance. At the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, D&D fan Luci Garfield asked Grand County High School math teacher Teddy Anderson to be an advisor and the school now offers a club for students to enjoy the game.
“The students get together every Thursday for about two to three hours to play,” Anderson said, and some students dress like their characters or put on elaborate makeup as well.
“The club also holds parties and other events,” said Anderson. “Their Christmas party had about 20 attendees because there were a few students from the Rainbow Club that went. Some of the students will also eat lunch in my room as well. They are all friends and it is always a very positive and welcoming environment.”
Right now, about 12 to 15 students, mostly seniors, attend every week.
“The group is really fun to be around,” said senior Nathan Mason. “We’re all crazy, but in an organized way. We all look out and take care of each other. It’s a great club to be in.”
Currently, the club is fundraising by selling concessions at school sports events like football and basketball games and use the money to buy fabric to make costumes that reflect their characters. Anderson also said the students were raising money to go to the Renaissance Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, in the spring, where they’ll wear the costumes they made.
