Cosmo’s spooktacular guide to a purrfect Halloween at the library

Meow and boo, my friends, it’s Cosmo the Library Cat.  All Hallows Eve is almost upon us and there are lots of resources at Grand County Public Library to help you have the happiest Halloween ever.

We’ve got some excellent how-to books on carving fancy jack-o’-lanterns, and for our littlest patrons, I recommend the picture books “Room on the Broom” and “Creepy Carrots.”  For older kids, I suggest “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” a fur-raising collection of tales for those who like their spines tingled. This book includes the classic horror story “The Cat’s Paw” about a majestic black cat who steals ham from a country bumpkin but then faces supernatural consequences! Yikes!

If this holiday puts you in a crafty mood, may I remind you about CreativeBug? It’s a super-cool online resource you can access with your library card. (Visit www.catalog.moablibrary.org, click on the “Resources” link and you’ll see CreativeBug. Set up your account, search “Halloween,” and you’ll find instructional videos for all sorts of Halloween projects from costumes to decor. Wish you had elegant pointed ears and magnificent whiskers like me? Need a papier mâché animal mask? Want to learn how to crochet a handsome black cat? There are video tutorials for all of that and more!

Perhaps the Halloween candy available out there doesn’t agree with your sophisticated palette? I can totally relate — imagine my horror when I discovered that “Swedish Fish” actually taste like fruit instead of mackerel! Blech! If you’re with me on this aversion to mass-produced candy, I have some ideas for you. Check out one of the library’s candy-making recipe books such as “Making Artisan Chocolates: Flavor-infused Chocolates, Truffles, and Confections.” I can personally recommend the book “Shellfish: 50 Seafood Recipes for Shrimp, Crab, Mussels, Clams, Oysters, Scallops, and Lobster.” Hear me out – prawn cocktails for trick-or-treaters! Why has no one tried this? I guarantee you’ll be the talk of the neighborhood. You’re welcome!

So, happy Halloween everyone, and please remember to be extra nice to black cats this month. Halloween can be a little scary for them sometimes. Meow for now, friends!
