Howdy Friends! Have you heard the buzz?

Here at Grand County Public Library, we love science and we’re all super geeked for this year’s Moab Festival of Science! This free, annual event runs from Wednesday, September 25th through Sunday the 29th and it’s packed with lots of interesting tours, lectures, STEM-onstrations and other events for you and your family! Scientists of all stripes have been invited to share what they’re doing, and the folks at the library are honored to have collaborated on several of these buzz-worthy events.

We’re starting with a free movie at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25 called “The Last Bumblebee,” which we’re showing here at the Moab Library. This award-winning documentary is all about the importance of endangered bumblebees and how scientists are working to protect them. Bumblebees are cute and furry, and as a keystone species, extremely important animals in their local ecosystems. Sounds a lot like me, here at the library. I bet I’d look pretty good with black and yellow stripes, too.

Next, we’ll welcome Entomologist Christy Bills who will tell us about a community science initiative called “The Western Firefly Project.” While fireflies are somewhat rare around here, they have actually been spotted in Moab in recent years! You can find out all about these luminescent little critters and how all of us can help scientists learn more at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, at the Moab Library Branch.

Then, we’re dusting off the book bike and bringing it to the Moab Festival of Science booth at the Red Rock Arts Festival on September 28th from noon to 3:30. Mary and Charlotte will be sharing stories, STEAM activities, and crafts.

The Moab Festival of Science is hosting many other fascinating events around town to feed your curiosity about our world, and you can learn more if you visit www.moab-scifest.org

Stay curious! Meow for now!
