Kung Fu Cosmo! Kids Event on May 13

Meow, and hello my friends. It’s Cosmo the cat, here to tell you about another amazing program at the Grand County Library. On Tuesday, May 13, at 6 p.m., Christopher Cleveland will present Kung Fu Brain Fighters!

I know all about needing to connect with my inner dojo. Have you ever seen a cat get the zoomies? We go from zero to a hundred in a blink. Kids can get the zoomies, too. For some kids, it feels like they have the zoomies most of the time. Kids have lots of energy. Martial arts give people a constructive outlet for that energy. It’s much better than using the curtains as a climbing wall, let me assure you.

Christopher will demonstrate some of the exciting things he has learned in his studies and share with families how studying martial arts has helped him combat some of the various challenges he faces with autism, such as focus, social interactions, sensory sensitivities and behavior patterns.

Martial arts classes are structured, with clear steps and style. Predictability gives students who study martial arts a sense of security, like knowing exactly where the best sunbeam will hit each afternoon. Focus is something I struggle with also. Getting a cat to focus on one thing is like trying to herd mice.

I have heard that young martial artists practice stances and moves with increasing concentration. It’s as if focusing on their bodies helps focus their minds. Perhaps I should try a bit of karate and pay attention when the humans talk…nah, I’ll just nap.
