The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has worked hard to strengthen public safety, modernize our operations, and deepen our partnership with the community we serve. As Sheriff, I want to share a look back at what we’ve accomplished and where we’re headed.

Law enforcement agencies in Moab have historically been shorthanded and faced recruitment challenges due to rural location yet high cost of living. This last year, the office operated at near full staff or fully staffed, despite the constant and evolving recruitment and retention challenges. This stability has allowed us to deliver consistent, high-quality service to Grand County residents and visitors.

Each month, we share our activity statistics on social media platforms, giving the public a transparent view of our workload. The monthly statistics include traffic stops, arrests, papers served, calls for service, dispatch activity including 911 calls, and search and rescue responses.

The year 2025 ended with some record-setting numbers. The total number of calls deputies were assigned to and responded to was 13,854. Comparing that number to 2024 with 10,491, the year ended with 3,363 more calls for service. There was a record 5,956 traffic stops conducted by sheriff’s deputies. That is 3,257 more traffic stops than 2024.

Our amazing Search and Rescue team responded to a total of 143 incidents, compared to 139 incidents the year prior. Sheriff’s deputies made a total of 418 arrests, compared to 299 in 2024. Papers served totaled 1,062, compared to 997 in 2024. The publishing of monthly and year-end incident statistics is for office accountability and transparency, which is imperative for public service.

In 2023, the Major Crimes Task Force was created and has been one of the most impactful developments.

More recently during 2025, the Moab City Police Department and the local Bureau of Land Management both signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and joined to collaborate as part of the task force. Through this joint interagency effort, we have seized record amounts of narcotics and arrested more suspects involved in internet crimes against children than ever before. These results reflect our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable among us and reducing the influence of dangerous drugs in our community.

In February 2025, the office established the Grand County Pre-Trial Services program and we are now able to provide a dedicated deputy for pre-trial release services. Pre-trial release programs help facilitate higher percentages of supervised released individuals and this has been impactful as to increasing pretrial liberties for those awaiting trial. This program has been almost solely paid for by grant funds the office was able to secure, and for 2026, we secured another $100,000 to continue funding the position.

Through local community resources and partners, the Grand County Jail increased jail programming and resources available to incarcerated individuals in 2025. Reducing recidivism rates is always the goal and through programs with peer and professional support, we are able to help facilitate making positive impacts.

Multiple grants were secured and awarded for 2025. These grants were utilized to purchase equipment for both the law enforcement and search and rescue sides of the Sheriff’s Office. Besides secured grant funds, the office has recently received multiple generous donations from local organizations and citizens.

Effective public safety depends on dedication and cooperation, and today we are better aligned than ever with our regional partners as we continuously strengthen our relationships. These interagency relationships are imperative as we do not have endless amounts of support and backup in rural southeastern Utah.

We have implemented community-based policing strategies and invested in new technologies as deputies continue to receive extensive training to ensure they are prepared for any situation they may encounter. Their professionalism, dedication, and readiness are a credit to their commitment to this department and to the Grand County community.

I have the utmost respect for the men and women of the Grand County Sheriff’s Office. Their commitment to service is evident every day, and I am honored to work alongside them as we continue building a safer community.
