Cosmo’s Corner: Cosmo’s cosmos

Cosmo the library cat is photoshopped onto a space satellite. He looks impressed!

Greeting earthlings! Cosmo the Library Cat here to tell you about my latest obsession: the cosmos. I know what youā€™re thinking and no, the library has not gotten a second cat. Iā€™m talking about the cosmic cosmos: specifically, about the amazing images from around the galaxy coming from the James Webb Space Telescope. JWST (or  ā€œJ-Dubsā€ as I like to call it) is sending us pictures from as far as 13.6 billion light years away and Iā€™m absolutely blown away.

Weā€™re seeing nebulas, galaxies, and solar systems that weā€™ve never seen before. Even earth-like exoplanets! It makes my fur stand on end to think about it! Iā€™m tingly with all the possibilities and questions these images raise! Is there life on other planets? Do they have cats there? And what would it be like to roll around in all that stardust?

If youā€™re as fascinated by these images as I am, youā€™ll definitely want to come to the Grand County Public Libraryā€™s event on Friday, August 12 at 6 p.m., where weā€™ll be looking at these pictures in depth with NASA Solar System Ambassador and Moab local, Crystal White. Crystal will show us some of her favorite images from the telescope, and help us understand what they mean for the future of science.

This free event will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 12 in the Grand County Public Libraryā€™s large meeting room. Bring the whole family, your sense of wonder, and your enthusiasm for my pal J-Dubs, the amazing telescope. Meow and wow for now friends, and I hope to see you Friday!
