Runners of all ages and abilities are encouraged to race for students and athletes in the Second Annual Moab Autumn Run on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Three events for various levels of fitness will be available, including 10-kilometer, 5-kilometer and Kid’s kilometer races. Last year, the race attracted more than 170 runners in the 10K and 5K, and almost 50 runners in the Kids’ K races.
The event was created by the governing board of Moab Charter School (MCS) and by Grand County High School Boys and Girls Cross Country coach, Randy Martin, as a fundraiser. All proceeds from the race went to the kids at MCS and the runners at the high school.
“This helps pay for uniforms, travel, and so forth for the student athletes,” Joe Heywood, said. “Moab Charter School has put their part of the raised money toward art and music programs for the students.”
The course is an out-and-back race that begins and ends at Swanny City Park near the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center. The course heads out to Kane Creek Road with turn-around points along the Colorado River.
Students in the pottery classes at MCS create a stamped ceramic medal for every race finisher in all three events. Every runner receives a t-shirt.
“My favorite part of the day is the Kids’ K with every finisher receiving a medal,” said Heywood, the director of the Moab Charter School. “There’s a great atmosphere at the race, and we encourage everyone who can come out to join us for this great event.”
