Carol Jean Head Brown passed away in her home in Moab on March 1 following a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her four loving daughters.
Brown was born to Irene Carrollo and Heischel Pete Head on Dec. 27, 1936, in Kemmerer, Wyoming. She attended Reliance High School and graduated from Hawthorne High School in Gardena, California, in 1954.
Brown married Albert “Clayton” Brown on December 23, 1954, in Gardena, California, and moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, where Clayton was stationed with the U.S. Air Force.
After living in various places while Clayton was in the U.S. Air Force, they moved back to Kemmerer, Wyoming, and later transferred to Utah, where they lived near La Sal Junction. In 1975, they moved to Moab where Brown worked for doctors Mayberry, Murray and Rouzer at the Moab Medical Center. Brown was active in Utah Ladies of the Elks, serving as the Utah State President from 1997 to 1998. After Clayton passed away in 2002, Brown moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where she volunteered for Hope West Hospice.
Brown recently moved back to Moab to be near her family. Brown loved spending time with her family and friends, and she especially enjoyed traveling together. She was blessed with four daughters, Brownyn Kay (Robert) Young of Monticello; Cathy Lynn (Jody) Squires of Juneau, Alaska; Maxine Irene (Richard) Arment of Louisville, Colorado; and Gail Marie (Darrin) Wells of Moab; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Brown is survived by her sister, Susan Kay Head (Jim Tischler) of Petaluma, California, and was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Brown; parents, Irene and Heischel Head; and her brother, Rev. Robert B. Head.
A rosary will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Thursday, March 7, at 7 p.m., and a funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 8, at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Community Nursing Service Home Health and Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
