The month of April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Grand County Family Support Center is sponsoring the annual Planting of the Pinwheels to promote awareness.
The Planting of the Pinwheels event is taking place on April 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Grand County Courthouse lawn, located at the corner of East Center and 100 East.
This annual event promotes awareness of child abuse in the Moab and Grand County community.
The time, from 2 to 4 p.m., will allow the victims of child abuse and the children of the community to plant a pinwheel after school. Light refreshments will be served.
According to the Utah Division of Child and Family Services, there were 41,338 referrals of abuse or neglect to Utah children in 2018, an increase from 38,237 referrals reported in 2016.
While many pinwheels will be planted on April 1, the “pinwheel garden” will remain through the month of April.
Anyone who would like to plant a pinwheel can pick one up in the courthouse at the offices for the Grand County Treasurer, recorder and clerk.
