The ABCs of health care

Take charge of your health at the 13th Annual Community Health Fair, and you’ll be entered in a raffle drawing to win health-related items such as a pair of hiking poles, or a fleece jacket.

The Community Health Fair, sponsored by Moab Regional Hospital, is hosting approximately 30 different organizations that will have representatives on hand to answer residents’ questions about their services. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. at the Grand Center, 182 N. 500 West.

“It’s a really fun community event,” Moab Regional Hospital Director of Community Relations and Program Development Sarah Shea said. “We have so many different organizations that come together under one roof to educate the community on health topics.”

Some will offer samples of their services. For example, attendees may be able to get a podiatry check, a quick chiropractic assessment, or talk to a specialist about diabetes, Shea said.

Representatives from eight different hospital departments, ranging from surgical to labor and delivery, will be there to talk about latest practices. The emergency room department will give information about “slips, trips and falls,” as well as hydration education, Shea said.

People will also be able to access their blood drive results. Moab Regional Hospital has been sponsoring a low-cost blood drive since Jan. 4. Participants who have not opted to access their results online via the patient portal can pick up their results at the community health fair, Shea said. People can also sign up for the patient portal, a secure website that gives people easy access 24 hours a day to their patient information.

Attendees can also learn about naturopathic remedies by visiting the Phoenix Rising Center booth, where naturopathic physician Dr. Don Leathers and his wife Catherine Shank, a bodywork and orthobionomy practitioner, will share information about their work.

Leathers and Shank will have literature about naturopathic medicine that incorporates the use of herbs, essential oils, nutrition, homeopathy and bodywork. Leathers will also talk about Qigong, an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. Leathers said for those who are interested, he will demonstrate by guiding people through the movements.

Leathers said he has participated in the health fair since its inception.

“I like it for two reasons – to be in the community and talk face-to-face with people – and that all practitioners get together,” he said. “Networking is important.”

Flight nurse Craig Campbell plans to share information about Classic Air Medical, who began serving Moab two-and-a-half years ago. Prior to that, the area relied solely on St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado, for medical transport services.

“Now we’re able to provide quicker service,” in addition to St. Mary’s, that offers backup transport, Campbell said.

Classic Air Medical also helps with search and rescue efforts. Grand County’s Search and Rescue team is one of the busiest in the nation, Campbell said.

“We’ll talk about prevention – how to avoid ever needing our services,” Campbell said. “That’s our goal – to never need us.”

Attendees will receive a map of all of the booths at the health fair. Those who visit each organization will be entered in the raffle to win donated prizes.
