Seventh-graders tackle real-life budgets at Reality Town

Students in costume at a school event, dressed as various professionals, stand proudly with certificates.

Margaret L. Hopkin Middle School held its annual Reality Town event on Friday, April 4, giving seventh-graders a hands-on lesson in financial literacy. With help from over 40 community volunteers, students navigated a mock economy—balancing budgets, paying for housing, food, and childcare, and more, based on fictional family scenarios and incomes tied to their GPA and interests. Many dressed for their assigned careers, with prizes awarded for best costumes.
