The Grand County High School Girls Tennis Team kicked off their 2024 season with matches against Gunnison on August 20 and at the Carbon Invitational Tournament on August 23 and 24. Head Coach Brian Ballard and Assistant Coach Lisa Scott said that the varsity and junior varsity teams have put in hard work and they expect to have a competitive, fun season.
The Varsity Lady Red Devils defeated region rival Gunnison 4-1 with wins for Paya Maughan, 1st Singles; Kimber McCandless, 3rd Singles; Quinn Potts and McKenzie Butler, 1st Doubles; and Rosee Thomas and Holly Hazlett, 2nd Doubles.
The Carbon Invitational tournament included eight teams from around the state. Paya Maughan won second place in the 1st Singles Silver Bracket, Sophia Scott won third place in the 2nd Singles Silver Bracket, and Kimber McCandless won second place in 3rd Singles Silver Bracket. For doubles, Mackenzie Butler and Quinn Potts, won first place in the 1st Doubles Silver Bracket, Rosee Thomas and Holly Hazlett won fourth place in the 2nd Doubles Gold Bracket. The JV team also got some good play time, competing in some tough matches.
The Grand County Junior Varsity tennis team has also competed hard, gaining good experience and impressing the coaches with their ability after only 3 weeks of practice. JV team includes Maddie McGinty, Jules Oliver, Emmie Simons, Kailee Thurman, Inga Wilkowske, Kaelynn Wareham, and Adalye Ross.
