Hi fellow adventurers! Cosmo the Library Cat here. As I was making my customary rounds, I noticed some exciting changes in the Children’s Room–there’s a gorgeous new display of framed illustrations from the book Maggie’s Misadventure, which recounts the true tale of when Maggie Corson, a library patron and good friend of mine, went out on a hiking trail and got trapped in quicksand!
That whole hullabaloo happened before my time, so I was quick to read a copy of Maggie’s book to get the lowdown about it. Maggie is extremely adventurous and she has a great tale to tell–narrow escapes and squishy situations. Her book is illustrated by the talented E. Jean Lanyon, who made the artistic decision to depict the people in the story as different animals. Ms. Lanyon chose just the right animal for every person in the story. I love that she depicted Maggie as a cat. (Adventurous and catlike–I knew we were kindred spirits!)
Now that the illustrations are up, I’ve been spending a lot of time admiring them. You can see the illustrations for yourself if you drop by the Children’s Room. We also have several other charming books by E. Jean Lanyon at the library that you can take a gander at! Maggie, if you’re reading, thanks for sharing your tale, and the next time you get the urge to dip your toe into quicksand, take my advice and give old-fashioned, dry-sand dirt baths a try.
