Cosmo’s Corner: a concert connoisseur cat

Good day, and a hearty meow, my friends. What a splendid time of year it is to hear music out of doors! I love few things more than sitting outside in the library courtyard listening to the symphony of bird song all around. Birds aren’t the only thing performing in the library courtyard this month. I’m excited to announce that the library is hosting a courtyard concert this weekend featuring a human musician, Sean Gaskell.

This Saturday, May 4, at 6 p.m. in the courtyard of the Moab Library (257 E. Center St.), Sean will introduce us to an instrument called the kora. I had never heard of the kora, so I did a little research and learned that the kora is a traditional harp from West Africa, made from a large dried gourd. Musicians have been playing them for centuries! This talented young man has studied under master musicians in Ghana and Senegal, and plays and sings traditional songs from the Mandinka people.

Sean will also tell us what he’s learned about this ancient culture and their musical traditions. It’s not every day you get to learn about an ancient musical tradition! If you’re interested in learning more before the show, visit www.seangaskell.com or look up his name on YouTube to find some recordings of his beautiful music.

As always, this concert is free and everyone is welcome! Please call the library at 435-259-1111 if you have any questions. Hope to see you on Saturday evening!
