A word from the library cat: Skyscraper Storytime

Meow friends, it’s Cosmo the Library Cat. Have you ever built a tower with blocks or cards? This can be a lot of fun. However, the taller your tower, the more difficult it is for it to remain standing and not just topple over. Gravity wants to pull everything downward. Gravity is a lot like cats in this way. We just can’t resist pushing things off edges and pouncing on structures our human friends are making.

Using sciences like math and geometry, architects have engineered incredibly tall, gravity-defying buildings called skyscrapers. I’m told these buildings are even taller than the library and far too strong to be knocked down by cats. Even high winds can’t topple them! If you would like to learn more about these marvelous structures, you can join us on Tuesday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand County Public Library for a STEAM storytime and engineering challenge that is all about skyscrapers!

First, we’ll read a fun story, and then we’ll learn about the principles behind skyscraper engineering and then we get to design our own! We will test the skyscrapers to see if they can withstand drafts of air from a fan without falling, just as real skyscrapers must withstand strong gusts of wind.

This event is free and is geared towards children 3 to 10 and their caretakers. However, all ages are welcome. So, come find us in the Large Meeting Room at the Moab Library Branch! I hope to see you there.

Editor’s note: Cosmo has promised to play nice and won’t knock down anyone’s creation.

Cosmo’s note: But if I did, and I invited 4 friends, you could say you’d been hit by a Cat 5 hurricane.
