Cosmo’s Corner: A very hoppy storytime

Miau, hola and ribbit, mis amigos. It’s Cosmo, the library gato, here to let you know about an upcoming bilingual storytime at Grand County Public Library in partnership with our friends at Moab Valley Multicultural Center.

Join us at the library at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 23 for a lively storytime in English and Spanish featuring the book “Jump, Frog, Jump!” or ”Salta, Ranita, Salta!”

As you might have surmised, la ranita, the frog, does a whole lot of jumping, and hopefully, so will you. We’ll also sing and do a jumping frog craft project.

We cats are excellent jumpers. Leap 4 feet up onto the library’s front desk? Ha! Mere kitten’s play! I prefer something a little more challenging; if you’re lucky, you’ll see me jump up onto one of the library’s 8-foot-high dividing walls.

But enough about me. I’ve heard there is a frog in South America that can jump 95 times its height, which is seriously amazing! However, I doubt that it does it with the grace and elegance that we cats are known for.  As for humans . . . well, jumping may not be your forte, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun doing it (and you look so cute trying!).

All this jumping and leaping might help get you in the mood for the upcoming “Leap Day,” on February 29. I was slightly disappointed to learn that Leap Day has absolutely nothing to do with leaping and jumping. It’s an extra day added onto February every four years because the time it takes the earth to revolve around the sun is a little bit longer than the calendar year of 365 days. So, humans figured out a way to adjust the calendar every fourth year, to keep in time with the Earth’s orbit.

But wait! It turns out that adding these Leap days actually makes the calendar years slightly too long, so in 2100, we’ll have to skip Leap Day to keep the calendar accurate. Did you all know this about calendars?! I had no idea, and I’m even a world-renowned calendar model! (By the way, it’s not too late to get your own 2024 Cosmo Calendars!)

Hope to see you at story hour, we’ll surely have a hoppin’ good time!  ¡Hasta luego!
