Grand County High School senior receives scholarships for track & academics
Grand County High School senior Mia McKay signed with Westminster University, located in Salt Lake City, this week. McKay received an athletic scholarship for track and also received an academic President’s Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarships for incoming students.
MSN: Why did you choose Westminster?
McKay: I chose Westminster because as someone who doesn’t know what I want to do in the future, I did know that I wanted to compete in athletics while in college.
While exploring schools, I knew that at a Division II level, I would be able to focus on athletics as well as take the time to explore academic pursuits.
MSN: What Events will you be competing in at college?
McKay: The events I will be competing in have not been completely determined yet. The coach became interested in me regarding my 300 hurdles and 100 hurdles, 800, and 400 times.
I also run cross country so there is a possibility that I could run longer distance track events as well, like the 3k steeplechase.
MSN: What are you looking forward to the most at Westminster?
McKay: I am really looking forward to continuing my athletic goals at the collegiate level. The campus is also very beautiful and I’m excited to explore my academic interests.
MSN: What are you going to miss the most when you leave Moab?
McKay: I’m so unexplainably grateful to have grown up in Moab. In adulthood, I think it’s going to be really hard to find a place to live that provides the same fulfillment as Moab does. I love the abundance of opportunities for exploration that Moab offers.
People say it all the time but we really do live in a beautiful place and I do not take that for granted. I’m excited to adventure and explore new beautiful places, but Moab’s beauty and abundance of outdoor activities will be difficult to live up to. But I can’t wait to find out what else is out there.
