Desert Wild launches apparel line with local adventurers in mind

In the heart of Moab’s downtown, Faye Hutchins has turned a fun idea into a vibrant business that intertwines fashion, community engagement, and a deep appreciation for the desert landscape.

“The dream of Desert Wild started as a clothing line,” Hutchins said. “Some might remember the first iterations of the Desert Wild dresses and skirts that we sold in our store, Indigo Alley, six years ago.”

Opening its doors in the spring of 2020 across Main Street from Indigo Alley, the brick-and-mortar incarnation of Desert Wild has become known among those seeking unique, locally inspired clothing.

“We are really proud of the store design, and the brands we carry to give people a great selection of clothing, shoes, and other outdoor items,” Hutchins said.

The store also is woven into the fabric of local causes and creativity, commissioning designs from Moab artists as well as picking different nonprofits to contribute to through a store give-back program.

“We’re lucky to live in a town with such amazing nonprofits,” Hutchins said. A portion of sales of the Desert Wild line will go towards Science Moab this year as part of the business’s mission to “empower and uplift the people, pets, and wildlife that call Moab home.”

Still, the distinctive charm of Desert Wild ties back to Hutchins’s original idea: an in-house clothing line, crafted with a Moab touch. Designs include a hooded long-sleeved dress, a playful fleece skirt with ample pockets, and a zip-up hoodie in both men’s and women’s sizing.

The designs are full of details drawn from the needs of Moab’s outdoor community, featuring long sleeves with thumb holes and pockets big enough to stow away cell phones.
