Sometimes when people get back from an adventure, they don’t want the experience to stop, said Philip Jankoski, a senior manager at Field Station. The first Field Station location opened up this year in Moab, renovating an old motel to create a new place not only for travelers but also a place for locals.
“Field Station is a response to people seeking an outdoor experience when they come to a community like Moab,” Jankoski said. “They’re not wanting the adventure to stop when they’re done for the day out, so we created a hotel that’s focused on education and community.”
The hotel contains a 600-square-foot gear shop, rental and guiding services, a space for coffee and beer, and also offers venue space for local events like Science Moab’s Science on Screen.
“We’re trying to bring everything under one roof,” Jankoski said. “We really want people who have been here for a while or just moved here to be able to attend a film screening event or just come for a cup of coffee experience.”
A second location near Joshua Tree National Park is planned to open in 2024. Like Moab, that location will be in a renovated property.
“We’re coming in and finding other distressed assets, caring about properties that are a bit of an eyesore in the community, fixing them up, and creating beautiful locations for people to get outside,” Jankoski said.
