Obituary: Lewis Weldon Jones

May 2, 1953 – July 1, 2023

Lewis Weldon Jones passed away peacefully in his home in Moab surrounded by his family on July 1, 2023.

Lewis (Louie) Weldon Jones was born in Monticello on May 2, 1953, to Leon & Mary Jones. The Jones family moved from Blanding to Moab in 1956 and then to Palisade, Colorado, in 1960 where he spent the remainder of his childhood. Louie spent a lot of time working in the peach orchards of Palisade and on the family farm. For years as a boy, he milked two cows every night. When he had a spare moment he loved working on cars. A ‘57 Fairlane and a ‘64 Falcon Sprint were a couple of his favorites, just to name two.

Somehow, Louie found time to play high school sports, lettering in football, wrestling and track. Louie graduated from Palisade High School in 1971. Shortly after high school, Louie had a son, Shane Thompson, with Judy (Richardson) Christopher in 1973.

In 1974, Louie met the love of his life, LeVida (Sanchez) Jones, and the two married shortly after. Louie and LeVida had two sons, Levi & Malcom Jones.

Louie was a hardworking man. He spent most of his career in the oil and gas industry in Colorado and Utah. Louie and his family moved to Moab in 1991 when he transferred to the Lisbon Valley gas plant. Louie retired from the plant in 2015.

Louie enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, rock hounding, riding motorcycles and four-wheelers, working on cars and, most of all, spending time with his wife, sons and grandchildren.

Louie was a jokester and always had a smile on his face. He was the kind of guy that if he didn’t like you, he wouldn’t pick on you! Louie was loyal, genuine, honest, hard-working, stubborn at times, and a man of many talents. He was an artist with a pencil and could whittle anything out of wood. There wasn’t anything around the house or on a car he couldn’t fix. He will forever be known by his grandchildren as “Goose,” a nickname that backfired with his oldest grandchild. He was an amazing husband, son, brother, father, grandfather and friend.

Louie is survived by his sons, Levi (Ashlee) and Malcom (Jennifer) Jones; grandchildren Domenique, Alyssa, Andy, Dixie, Gabby, Amaya and Weldon Jones; brother, Kent (Cherie) Jones; and sister, Marilyn (Steve) Peeples.

Louie is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, LeVida (Sanchez) Jones; his mom and dad, Leon & Mary Jones; and brother, Eddie Jones.

A celebration of life for both Louie & LeVida Jones will be held on July 20 at 11 a.m. at the Spanish Valley Mortuary (386 N. 100 West, Moab) with lunch to follow at the LDS Church (701 Locust Lane, Moab). A graveside service for both Louie & LeVida Jones will be held at the Palisade Cemetery in Palisade, Colorado, on July 21, 2023, at 11 a.m.
