Obituary: Wilda Morrison

Wilda Morrison passed away at home on Sunday, March 19, 2023, surrounded by family. She was 94.

Wilda was born February 8, 1929, in Crowley, Louisiana, as the youngest of five children. She was the last surviving member of her family. Born Wilda and Vivian Mires due to a dual birth certificate snafu, Wilda combined the names to become Wilda Vivian Mires.

She loved the name Wilda until her family lovingly added “Hurricane” or “Wild” to the beginning. Wilda was proud of her Louisiana roots in Crowley and was able to visit her sisters and brother often into the 1990s. These visits always were graced with great Cajun food.

Wilda resided in Moab for 67 years and had many friends of great character.  Many people thought she and the late Shannon Wiggins were sisters, and she and the late Carolee Luhrs were “Soul Sisters”….or at least sisters of the soul.

Wilda was employed at Family Drug from 1972 to 1989. In those years, the word “family” truly defined the atmosphere and many in Moab remember her as a “fixture” in the store.

Wilda was adopted in 2001 by a feral cat named “Mineaux.” Mineaux was a companion and loyal guard cat until February of this year.

Wilda married Chuck Morrison in 1976. They were married for 24 years, until his death in 1999.

Wilda is survived by her four children, Mike, Ray, Bonnie and Rich; by Bonnie’s children Jason, Chuck, and Jared; Mike’s son, Mike; Ray’s daughter, Jenny; and Rich’s children, Logan and Vanessa; as well as two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Sloane.

At Wilda’s request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.

The family sends many thanks to Dr. Katherine Williams and Moab Regional Hospital’s Nursing, Emergency and Administration staff, as well as Joe and Melissa of Community Nursing Services.
