Joseph Secody of the Navajo Nation performed a hoop dance in front of city hall during the Indigenous Celebration event held on Oct. 14. The event was organized by the Native American Club of Moab, Full Circle Intertribal Center and the City of Moab. During the event, Mayor Emily Niehaus read a proclamation which said “the City of Moab acknowledges that this community was built upon the homelands and traditional territory of the Indigenous Peoples’ of this region,” that the city “has a responsibility to oppose systemic racism,” and declared the second Monday in October as Indigenous Celebration Day.
