As a fifth-grader at Helen M. Knight Elementary School, Austin “Paris” Wright had notable success as a wrestler, finishing the 2018-19 wrestling season with a record of 241-16. According to a press release, he finished the season with 32 individual championships, and was named an All-American nine times.
“He accomplished all this while wrestling for Devils Wrestling, Champion’s Wrestling and his Dual Team’s Pueblo Original Wrestling Association (POWA) and Team Utah,” the press release said.
His last tournament of the season was the Grand River Rumble held in Lansing, Michigan. He competed in the individual tournament in the 12-and-under category, winning first place. He also competed in the team duals where he went 8-0 for his dual team POWA. The team finished third out of 48 teams from all across the country.
Some of his other major accomplishments from the season include Utah State Championships in Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman forms of wrestling; he also won the Rocky Mountain National Championships in both folk style and freestyle. In addition, he won the World of Wrestling West Coast Nationals and was named All-American at the Virginia Holiday Duals, the New Jersey Wildwood Duals, the Michigan Grand River Rumble Duals, the Nevada West Coast National Duals and Ohio Heartland Duals with all his teams placing in the Gold pool, according to the press release.
Paris, who is the son of Wyland and Holly Wright, said he loves traveling all over the country and putting Moab on the map for wrestling.
Paris will get a two-week break before his 2019-20 wrestling season kicks off in San Diego, California, at the RMN Events sponsored “D day on the Midway,” where he will be wrestling for Utah Gold. The finals will be held aboard the USS Midway.
