Doreen Lindsay Portner, an 18-year resident of Moab, passed away on Oct. 19, at Moab Regional Hospital. She was 89.
Portner was born in Oakland, California, on April 6, 1929, the oldest daughter of Marion and Elfrieda Lindsay. She grew up in Berkeley and attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in physical education. She then earned a second PhD from the University of Southern California in social work. She married Gordon W. Portner in 1966.
Portner taught at Chapman College and worked as a psychiatric social worker in the Los Angeles area before she retired and moved to Moab. She loved the outdoors and spent much of her spare time trail riding, hiking and canoeing. She was passionate about dogs and horses in particular and animals in general. Portner was an enthusiastic amateur musician and played the French horn and the tuba in various community bands and orchestras. She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Doreen was predeceased by her parents; her brother Thomas; and her husband. She is survived by her sister, Sandra Lindsay Horne; four nieces, Christine Horne, Naomi Horne, Joanne Murphy and Miriam Horne and their families; and three stepchildren, Janine Portner, Warren Portner and Paulette Portner, and their families.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m., with a viewing starting at 11:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, 701 Locust Lane. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
